The Argan tree

Known as the « Tree of Life », the Argan tree (Argania Spinosa) is a spiny tree that grows exclusively in the south-west of Morocco.

The Argan tree plays an irreplaceable role in the ecological balance and the preservation of biodiversity. With its strong root system, it contributes to the maintenance of soil and helps fight against wind and water erosion desertification which threatens much of the region.

Alongside providing a vital source of income and food for the local community, the argan tree can grow as high as eight to ten meters and can live up to 200 years. This endemic species begins to bear fruit around age 5, and reaches its maximum production capacity after 20 years.

Argan tree is very resistant to drought and heat. It provides protection from desertification and helps preserve biodiversity.

As home to this rare and endangered species, the Argan forest was declared an International Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1998.

Argan oil is extracted from the kernel of the fruit of the argan tree (Argania spinosa) that is grows exclusively in abundance in the arid and semi-arid areas of southwestern Morocco. For centuries, Argan oil has always been used by the Berbers of the Atlas Mountains for culinary, cosmetic and medicinal purposes.

The Benefits & Uses of Prickly Pear Seed Oil

****

Composition of Prickly Pear Seed Oil

All vegetable oils (yep, prickly pear is a vegetable and a fruit—the green pods are a veggie, the pears are a fruit) contain nonessential and essential fatty acids (EFAs). When the skin doesn’t get enough EFAs, its barrier is affected, and we’re at risk of dry, irritated, or dull complexions.

Of any beauty oil on the market, prickly pear contains the highest percentage (88%) of unsaturated fatty acids, which are essential to stimulating healthy cell production and turnover. It also contains the highest level of tocopherol, or vitamin E, which protects the skin and helps it retain moisture.
