The Argan tree

Known as the « Tree of Life », the Argan tree (Argania Spinosa) is a spiny tree that grows exclusively in the south-west of Morocco.

The Argan tree plays an irreplaceable role in the ecological balance and the preservation of biodiversity.

With its strong root system, it contributes to the maintenance of soil and helps fight against wind and water erosion desertification which threatens much of the region. Alongside providing a vital source of income and food for the local community, the argan tree can grow as high as eight to ten meters and can live up to 200 years. This endemic species begins to bear fruit around age 5, and reaches its maximum production capacity after 20 years

Argan tree is very resistant to drought and heat. It provides protection from desertification and helps preserve biodiversity.

As home to this rare and endangered species, the Argan forest was declared an International Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1998.

Argan oil is extracted from the kernel of the fruit of the argan tree (Argania spinosa) that is grows exclusively in abundance in the arid and semi-arid areas of southwestern Morocco. For centuries, Argan oil has always been used by the Berbers of the Atlas Mountains for culinary, cosmetic and medicinal purposes.

One tree produces an average of 10kg of fruit per year.

Types of Argan Oil

There are two types of Argan Oil: Culinary Argan Oil and Cosmetic Argan Oil.

Both grades of Argan Oil are made from cold-pressed Argan nut kernels. The cold-pressed oil extracted from the lightly roasted kernels is used for cooking while the cold pressed oil obtained from non-roasted kernels is used for cosmetic purpose. Argan oil for cosmetic use is made from unroasted, raw kernel pits, unlike the culinary version.

Culinary Argan Oil is used for cooking and eating or nutritional supplements. It has a golden-brown color and a toasted, nutty smell.

Culinary Argan Oil is very rich in vitamins, omega fatty acids and other nutrients. It has been used in Morocco in traditional medicine for the treatment of health problems.
